Part Four

“Ahhhhhhh... This is just great...”

A scuffed up Whimsicott with a yellowing cotton crown, a shredded bandana, and several missing teeth grinned lazily up at his transporter and partner in crime, Gee the Drifloon, who was drifting on a draft, high in the sky.

“You get what I’m sayin’, Gee? Clear day, a nice breeze, and an old forest begging for a good demolishing: could we ever ask for more in an assignment?”

“...” said Gee.

“Yeah, you right. Maybe one where we didn’t have to bring back our target alive...” replied the Whimsicott, chuckling.

The Drifloon closed its eyes in what seemed to be appreciation of Billy’s words. Then again, one could never be very sure of what a Drifloon thinks, due to it’s lack of a mouth. But that was all cool, thought Billy Rumpus, Gee was a chill guy (or girl, or whatever). He looked up to find Gee gazing placidly at the fluffy white clouds drifting past his face, not noticing that he was absent-mindedly drifting back to where they had come from. Billy sighed and tugged at Gee’s strings to steer him back on course. Yup, Gee was chill, maybe even slightly too chill; they couldn’t fail Mr. Lovejoy all because of their relaxed approach. The punishment would be more than severe.

The Whimsicott took a shuddering breath at that possibility before turning his attention determinedly to the forest floor below him. The tops of the trees were swaying with the breeze and their leaves shimmered by the light of the sun. Occasionally a Spearow would fly past the two high up in the air, providing them with a bright melody that completed the picture started by the gleaming red, yellow, and green far beneath them. But all of that was unimportant.

The time would come for those colors to be consumed by the whites and blacks of smoke. However, for now all Billy had to focus on was a small mixture of pink and gray. Billy grinned once again.

“Don’t worry Mr. Waternoose. We’re a comin’.”

The two floated around the great blue skies for a little while longer, their eyes peeled for their prey, before...

“There!”

A flash of pink amongst the green, but that was all Billy needed. He yanked down on Gee’s strings and they started to descend upon the Timburr-shaped blurr.

“Slowly now, we almost in range...” The Whimsicott whispered up to Gee.

Suddenly the blurr turned, spun around, and began to run.

“Damn... He saw us.” Well, that part was ruined. It was much harder to hit a moving target, impossible considering how inaccurate a dollop of stun-spore was from the height they were at.

“Okay, Gee...” Billy sighed. “It’s time for plan B.” His face split into a huge grin. “Let’s nuke him!”

Gee looked down at the Whimsicott, whose face was flushed with excitement, and shook his head.

“Oh... Right... Fine. Yeah. We’ll just... just block his escape route...”

But even that would be difficult, reflected Billy. The kid was fast, especially for a Timburr, and branches were constantly blocking them from aiming his seed bombs properly. Just a bit more time was all he needed...Just a bit more...

“Oh, screw it.”

Billy grabbed the seed bombs hidden in his wild mane of hair and started throwing.

Gee flung him/her/itself to the right, and Billy stopped to keep himself aloft. Realizing what he had done, Billy felt his heart drop abruptly into his stomach and sizzle in his shock. He watched, horror-struck, as about thirty bombs fell from the sky.

Time seemed to slow down, his heart pounded furiously, the wind barraged the cotton on his head, and he would later swear that he could hear a faint whistling sound as he saw Lee turn around, eyes widening, as the tiny black seeds sped toward his face.

The explosion rent the forest apart. Everything within twenty meters was flattened as a great plume of smoke and flame burst up from a crater the size of a house. The shockwave came almost immediately, an invisible barrage of force and sound that demolished all that was left in the area and knocked Billy and Gee out of the sky.

As he fell to the ground, his descent eased by his light weight and smoldering crown, all Billy could mutter was, “Lovejoy’s gonna kill me,” before he lost consciousness.
